Howdy Cowboys and Cowgirls! I am Chloe Yonker your 2013 Michigan High School Rodeo Association Queen and student board representative. Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I am a senior attending Big Rapids High School where I compete on the Equestrian team, had the honor of being a homecoming court nominee, and was also the Vice President of Student Council last year.
My background is primarily 4-H based, so I grew up in the pleasure arena rather than the rodeo atmosphere. I was first interested in rodeo when I watched the high school rodeo during the Stallion Expo at Michigan State. Following the rodeo, my mother and I went to the booth for more information and I signed up that November.
Never in my wildest dreams would I have ever thought that one day I’d be Miss Michigan High School Rodeo Queen. A special thank you to former queens, Emilie Samppala and Jessalyn Gingrich, all my supporters, sponsors, directors, and family in helping make this dream become a reality, it has been a blessing!
Enough about me, now I have the privilege to share with you all about this incredible association! MHSRA offers all the rodeo events: Calf Roping, Team Roping, Steer Wrestling, Breakaway Roping, Saddle Bronc Riding, Barrel Racing, Bareback Bronc Riding, Pole Bending, Bull Riding, and Goat Tying.
Besides all the regular rodeo events there are also other aspects of competition through the association as well. Cutting, Shooting, and of course the Queen's Contest are the other available opportunities for competitors that are interested in other experiences. MHSRA also has 2 age divisions Jr. High 6th-8th grade and High School 8th-12th grade so it’s never too early or too late to start!
The rodeo season typically starts in August and ends in June with our State Finals rodeo at Tom's Western Store in Ovid, MI. Even though we don’t hold rodeos through the “winter months” we are busy with other activities include cowboy prom, a special needs rodeo, horse expos and community service opportunities.
I look forward to seeing many new faces at the upcoming rodeos and events. Welcome to the sport of family, fun, and western heritage; enjoy the ride!
Now let’s rodeo!
